Marburg Virus Spreads to New Locations in Ethiopia
Marburg virus has spread to new locations in Ethiopia. World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed its outbreak in Ethiopia on November 14.
Since the confirmation of Marburg outbreak in Ethiopia, the virus has been restricted to Jinka town which is situated in South Ethiopia region. However, today Ethiopian Health Ministry officials confirmed that one confirmed case has been found in Hawassa. Hawassa is the capital city of Sidama regional state of Ethiopia. It is situated hundreds of kilometers away from Jinka.
According to the statistics released by the Ethiopian Health Ministry today, 78 tests have been conducted so far. 12 confirmed cases have been found. 7 people died, 3 recovered and 3 are on treatment. November 26 was the deadliest day. On November 26, seven tests were conducted. Two confirmed cases were found and two people died of the virus.
These is no approved vaccine or specific treatment available against Marburg virus. The mortality rate could reach around 80%.
