Fano Zemene Kassie Rumored to be in Mekelle
It is being rumored that Fano Zemene Kassie is in Mekelle, Tigray regional capital. For the last 3 days, rumors have been spread that Gojjam Fano chief Zemene Kassie is in Mekelle.
Zemene Kassie is one of the major Fano commanders. He is known for establishing contacts with Eritrea, Oromo Liberation Army and Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Fano militias have been fighting the Ethiopian security forces since 2023.
On weekend, Ethiopian ruling party backed activists claimed that Zemene was critically ill and has was receiving medical assistance in Mekelle city. It was alleged that under the fake name “Yonathan Habtom”, Zemene Kassie was being treated in the Tigray regional capital. Yesterday it was claimed that the Fano commander was admitted to Med Star health clinic in Mekelle.
No official statements have been issued by Amhara Fano or Tigray regional government so far. Fano militias fought Tigray regional forces during Tigray war which ended in November 2023. However since last year, a new alliance has been taking shape involving Fano, TPLF, OLA and Eritrea, against the government in Addis Ababa.
