Ethiopia: Military Seals Off Towns in Arsi Zone to Contain Marburg
Ethiopia: Military has reportedly sealed off towns in Arsi zone where several people have died with Marburg virus like symptoms. World Health Organization confirmed on November 14 that Marburg virus patients had been found in southern Ethiopia.
According to local sources, 13 people have died after contracting Marburg virus in Asella district of Arsi zone. The virus spread during burial of a cow that died of Anthrax. Ethiopian military soldiers has imposed a complete ban on the movement of people to and from Asella and Aseko towns reportedly.
The Ethiopian Ministry of Health yesterday confirmed six deaths in Jinka town. The Health Minister Mekdes Daba claimed that 3 people died whose tests confirmed that they had contracted Marburg virus. While 3 other died with Marburg virus like symptoms but no testing could be done. She claimed that 17 samples had been sent to labs for examination.
The Health Minister said that the virus was contained in Jinka town which is situated in South Ethiopia regional state. The 13 deaths being reported by local sources happened in Asella and Aseko towns which are located in Arsi zone. So far Ethiopian Health Ministry officials have not confirmed the deaths in Asella and Aseko towns.
