Clashes erupted on Monday between Eritrean Opposition and Pro government groups in Israel. Since last year, intra community violence in Eritrean diaspora has been on the rise.
The opposition brigade Nhamedu and pro Eritrean groups clashed in Hatika neighborhood, situated in Tel Aviv the Eritrean capital. According to the local police, the parties were armed with assault weapons. 4 people were injured including a police officer.
Around 2 weeks ago, an Eritrean migrant was stabbed to death in Tel Aviv. Wedi Worku was affiliated with opposition brigade nhamedu which accused pro Eritrean government people of having murdered Wedi Worku.
In January this year, two Eritreans were killed in a brawl in Rishon Lezion Israel. Violence in Eritrean community in Israel began in September last year when opposition and pro government group fought on the streets of Tel Aviv, leaving dozens injured, including police officials.
Pro Eritrean government groups accuse Brigade Nhamedu of attacking peaceful gathering organized by Eritrean community. While opposition brigade Nhamedu alleges that these gatherings have backing of Eritrean government which wants to divide and blackmail Eritrean diaspora community.
Opposition brigade nhamedu claims that it is working for a political change in Eritrea. Since its formal independence from Ethiopia in 1993, Eritrea has been under the rule of one party and one man. Isaias Afwerki is in power as president and as the head of People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ).
This month, Eritreans are celebrating their independence day. Pro government diaspora community is organizing celebratory activities in Europe, US and Canada. Brigade Nhamedu are resorting to diplomatic, legal and violent tactics to stop these programs.
