Assassination Attempt on Arega Kebede, Amhara President
An assassination attempt has been made on Arega Kebede, the Amhara President today. It was announced by Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) today.
“Mr. Arega Kebede, who claims to be the President of the Amhara Region, was attacked in Lalibela! According to the AFANF* Eastern Amhara Sub-Region Menelik Division, General Asaminew Tsige Corps—Takeze divisio carried out a joint attack today on November 10, 2025, from 14:30 until 15:30 in the afternoon. During this operation, the person who says ‘I am the regional president,’ Mr. Arega Kebede, after departing from Bahir Dar Airport and arriving at Lalibela International Airport, was on his way into Lalibela city when, near airstrip, at a place called ‘Liyu Simu Berta,’ a sudden and well-planned attack was executed against him,” said Amhara Fano National Force in a statement issued today.
“In the lightning attack, more than ten of his red-beret bodyguards were neutralized, but the ‘president’ briefly turned back, was near the airstrip, changed route, and fled in another direction,” claimed AFNF.
Amhara regional government has not directly addressed the claim by Fano. But in a statement issued today, Amhara regional government claimed to have conducted a security operation against Fano fighters in Lasta district. Lalibela airport and Lalibela city are situated in Lasta district.
“Action has been taken against the extremist group that was hiding in North Wollo zone, Lasta woreda. Many of the extremist groups have been destroyed, vehicles, motorcycles and different types of weapons and medical equipment that the extremist used have been seized,” Amhara Regional Communication Office claimed today.
Verification of Fano’s claim about assassination attempt on Amhara president Arega Kebede could not be made by any independent sources. According to a resident of Lasta woreda, today he heard sounds of gunshots in the direction of Lalibela airport. Since 2023, Fano militias have been fighting the Ethiopian security forces.
