Ale Bagu Volcanic Eruption in Ethiopia Causes Massive Ash Clouds
A volcanic eruption in Ale Bagu caused massive ash clouds today. Ale Bagu is situated near Erta Ale in the Afar region of Ethiopia. The explosion occurred south of the well-known Erta Alé volcano and was confirmed by several independent sources.
The eruption was reportedly visible as far away as the Tigray Mountains. Eyewitnesses described short, bright “volcanic flashes,” which could indicate strong electrostatic charging within the ash cloud . The eruption reportedly occurred in Ale Bagu. Ale Bagu volcano, which is just over 1000 m high, geologically belongs to the Erta Alé volcanic series. Ale Bagu is a type of volcano that can potentially erupt much more explosively. Ash plume was detected today in satellite imagery at an elevation of 10,000 feet
Ale Bagu is an unknown volcano, which is not listed as active. The volcano is not continuously monitored, so magma may have accumulated underground undetected. It is speculative that there was a rapid magma ascent from deep underground.
